In 1989 it was rediscovered by a student of the University of Minho. Then, a tailor re-invented it based on some manuscripts and on painted ceramic tiles (azulejos) which still exist in the rectory, at Terreiro do Paço, also from the 18th century.
The Academic Costume (male) of the University of Minho is composed of:
• Black shoes
• Black socks
• Short trousers
• High collar white shirt, with buttons at the back
• Jacket
• Cape
• Tricorn
The Academic Costume originated from the day when the school was run by the church and its objective was to reduce social differences between members of the church.
In the Minho Academy the costume is notably known for its cocked hat, which gives the name to the entire costume: Tricorn. Back in the 18th century this was the costume used by the students of the St. Vincent of Paul college.
This privilege was granted by the King and allowed them to dress like the Coimbra University students. This traditional costume disappeared some years later when the Portuguese prime-minister Marquis of Pombal expelled the Jesuits from the country.
